Your first granny square (UK terms)

The classic building block of blankets, cushions and bags. Make one, and you'll want to make a hundred.

This pattern uses UK crochet terms. If you're used to American patterns, a UK treble (tr) is the same stitch as a US double crochet (dc). Abbreviations: ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, tr = treble, sp = space.

Step by step

  1. Start: ch 4 and join with a sl st to the first ch to make a ring.
  2. Round 1: ch 3 (counts as first tr), 2 tr into the ring, ch 2. *3 tr into the ring, ch 2* three times. Join with a sl st to the top of the first ch 3. You now have four clusters of three trebles.
  3. Round 2: sl st across to the next ch-2 corner space. In that space work (ch 3, 2 tr, ch 2, 3 tr). *In the next corner space work (3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr)* three times. Join with a sl st.
  4. Round 3: sl st to the next corner. Work (ch 3, 2 tr, ch 2, 3 tr) in the corner, then 3 tr in the gap between clusters along the side. Repeat around: corners get (3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr); side gaps get 3 tr. Join.
  5. Change colour at the start of any round by joining the new yarn in a corner space.
  6. Keep adding rounds the same way until the square is the size you want, then fasten off and weave in the ends.
  7. Block your squares (pin out and lightly mist with water) so they're all the same size before joining them.
